Getting to the start line meant taking the Albert and Meuse-Escaut canal bridges. XXX Corps did this in early September, but the opposition was fierce and showed that German resistance had stiffened after the rout. Here troops cross the Escaut on September 19.

The plan was simple: paras would take the bridges and XXX Corps would motor up the road. It didn’t work like that. Lack of aircraft meant that the drops had to be conducted over three days so that while surprise was total, the Germans had time to react before the Allies forces reached a large enough number. Hemmed in, the lightly equipped paras were no match for armor. Bad weather crippled resupply drops. XXX Corps’ advance route became “Hell’s Highway” and German troops proved larger in numbers and better organized than expected.
